The annual STEM Video Game Challenge that aims “to motivate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning by tapping into students’ natural passion for playing and making video games” officially launched on November 15. The contest is open to students in Middle School, High School, and Collegiate categories, as well as adults in the Educator category, and runs through March 12, 2012. The contest is hosted by sponsors like E-Line Media, Xbox 360, and AMD, which has a campus right here in Southwest Austin.

It’s an ideal project for after school clubs and home school groups, as well as those who are self-motivated to work on a project of this scope on their own time. Not only are participants able to create something that could potentially have an effect on youth education, but they also can win lots of cool prizes. Winners in the middle and high school categories can win AMD-based laptops, software packages, and other skill-developing tools, while their sponsoring organizations win software and cash. The collegiate and educator category winners also have the opportunity to win cash.

AMD clearly has a big stake in the contest, as the future of educational software is very important to them. Advanced Micro Devices officially opened the doors of its “Lone Star” campus in Southwest Austin just outside of the Ridge at Lantana subdivision on June 16, 2008. The campus features such sustainable design techniques as 100% native landscaping, sustainable materials, and rainwater collection. Austin is home to a large portion of the company’s executive staff and is one of AMD’s most significant marketing and product development sites. It provides jobs to approximately 2,300 Austin employees.

If you’re looking for a home near AMD’s “Lone Star” campus, the Ridge at Lantana subdivision is the perfect place to look. As a resident of Ridge at Lantana, Austin REALTOR® Brian Talley is an expert on the excellent options available. Be sure to call him for all of your Austin home search needs.
