southwest austin christmas treesIt’s that time of year, the time when tinsel and ornaments make their way out of the attic, when fa la la la las and jingling bells fill the radio waves, and something about the air seems a tad merrier. If you haven’t already started your holiday decorating, this weekend is the perfect time to begin, and Papa Noel’s is the perfect place to visit for that time-honored centerpiece, the Christmas tree.

Papa Noel’s lot is at 6518 U.S. 290, just north of William Cannon Drive. They’ve had a presence in Oak Hill for an impressive 31 years, becoming a staple of the Southwest Austin community in that time, and a Papa Noel tree is the perfect addition to one of the lovely homes in the Ridge at Lantana subdivision.

Papa Noel offers three different type of trees at their lot: the Noble, Fraser, and Nordmann Fir Trees, so what, exactly, is the difference between the three?

Noble: The Noble Fir indeed has a noble history, as the R.A.F. Mosquito planes of World War II were built with its wood. It is considered a great tree to use as a Christmas tree because it has sturdy branches and long keepability. Its maximum height in the wild can reach over 200 feet. It has four-sided needles that often appear silver in color.

Fraser: Named for Scottish Botanist John Fraser, who explored the Appalachian Mountains in the late 18th century, this tree reaches a maximum height of 80 feet and a diameter of 1-1.5 feet. Its slightly upturned branches make it appear more compact than it actually is, and the needles are flattened and dark green.

Nordmann: If you want to be hip with your tree this year, go for the Nordmann. It hasn’t been used as a Christmas tree in the United States for very long, typically appearing in homes in Germany, Norway, and Turkey. The tree has great needle retention so it is quickly becoming an American favorite. In the wild, they can reach over 200 feet tall, and the needles are soft and dark.

Papa Noel’s trees come from their farms in North Carolina and Oregon and are carefully tended throughout the entire 12 year (and sometimes more) process that it takes to cultivate these magnificent trees. Their trees are so nice that the White House even uses them!
