  • Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s Upcoming Family Garden will be Magical for Residents of Ridge at Lantana
  • April 30, 2012   -   10 views
  • Wildflower Center Family Garden AustinAs a strong advocate for the environment and the natural world, the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson can be seen all around Austin, from Lady Bird Lake downtown to the LBJ Wildflower Center in Southwest Austin. Now her other major legacy, her children, are making a huge impact; this April, Luci Baines Johnson and Ian Turpin donated $1 million to the LBJ Wildflower Center to develop a Family Garden that will bear their name, a new destination that will excite Ridge at Lantana residents.

The garden will be designed “to foster hands-on, creative play and learning as children explore nature on 4.5 acres of native plant gardens.” It will be a true wonderland for children, with features such as a 3-foot-tall Metamorphosis Maze made of native hedges, a giant bird’s nest woven from native vines that children can climb and play in, a waterfall, wading creek, and grotto, as well as an elevated boardwalk and open-air pavilion. The goal of the project is to continue with Lady Bird’s dream of inspiring future generations to care for the environment. It also will be a model of green landscaping as a pilot project of the Sustainable Sites Initiative. Read More >>

  • Austin petsSupporting local schools is a good way to support a community, and at Austin High School’s Pet Vaccination Clinic/Boys and Girls Soccer fundraiser, donors get a two-for-one deal: they are able to help a great athletics program raise money and they save money on necessary vaccinations for their furry friends.

On Saturday, April 21 from 10:00am to 11:30am, community residents can bring their critters to the clinic at Austin High by the tennis courts. A short drive from the Ridge at Lantana subdivision, this is a great, affordable way to do lots of good. Ten percent of the clinic’s proceeds will go to the school, as well as $10 for every voucher that supporters use at their next visit to one of their sister clinics (including Austin Vet Care). According to APP, “We’ve done about 200 clinics in the year and a half that we’ve been operational, around Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, and Buda. We’ve been able to give back over $4,600 to schools so far.” Read More >>

  • Clint Small Middle School Looking for Runners
  • March 23, 2012   -   8 views
  • There are a few things that Austin and Forrest Gump have in common: charm, caring, and … running. With the multitude of events in this town, it’s hard to decide which to participate in, especially since so many of them support amazing causes. For those who live in the Ridge at Lantana subdivision, supporting Clint Small Middle School is as easy as taking a run through downtown Austin at the Austin American Statesman’s Cap 10K. The school has participated with a big showing in the race for many years, with students, faculty, and families coming out to be involved.

The race is now in its 35th year and is the largest 10k in Texas and fifth largest in the nation. It’s considered an “annual rite of spring in Austin,” and this spring will see the runners take their marks on March 25. The school hopes that students, families, and the community will join them by participating in the timed race or fun run and walk or by volunteering. In addition, there is a Middle School Challenge, where the top 20 fastest students’ times will be grouped together to create a school time. Prizes of donations to the school’s PTA will be awarded to participating schools that make a first, second, or third place showing. Read More >>

  • Oak Hill Elementary Carnival – Good, Clean Fun for Ridge at Lantana Residents
  • February 28, 2012   -   25 views
  • southwest austin schools, oak hill elementaryLouisiana’s Mardi Gras and Rio’s Carnival may have come and gone, but who needs them when Oak Hill Elementary’s annual Carnival is this Friday? From 5:30 to 8:30pm on Friday, March 2, the OHE campus, just down the road from Ridge at Lantana, will be transformed into a giant carnival featuring nearly every type of fun one can imagine. Lots of returning attractions will be featured, including a rock wall, bounce houses, bungee run, tunnel maze, and face painting. New attractions this year include hamster balls, a petting zoo, henna tattoos, and a photo booth. The carnival also includes a silent auction that will help raise funds for the school.

Tickets and wristbands are available for purchase on the PTA website until 6pm on March 1st. They also will be available at the event, but purchasing online helps save time (no waiting in lines) and money (prices are lower online). OHE parents should remember that every grade level is required to bring a donation for their class booth. The carnival could still use a few volunteers, both from the community and students’ parents, as well as donations of items like prizes and silent auction items. This is a great way for anyone in the community to support such an important part of Southwest Austin. Read More >>

Seventy percent of the cost of a bicycle/pedestrian bridge will be covered by a $7 million grant from state and federal funds. The remainder will be covered by local bond funds. Read More >>
